Byond Mi-Book Mi7 – Mediocre looks, decent hardware, and good performance
Byond is new brand in phone and tablet market but they have quickly come to limelight with good products at low price tag. Byond Mi-Book Mi7 is amongst them. It’s a seven inches tablet having Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich OS. It runs on dual core processor and has features like GPS and 3G calling. Let’s see what this device is all about in detail –
Byond Mi-Book Mi7 doesn’t have an exciting design but it is still good looking. The review model which we got was all white and it had flat front along with big glass bezel. Apart from this, there is camera located on left side and the front side doesn’t have any buttons.
On the rear side, there is aluminium finished back cover and it isn’t removable. This means you won’t be able to replace the battery on your own. On lower part of back cover, there are the stereo speakers. Close to this, there is the company logo.
There is white plastic on rear side edges of this device. There is camera located on top left side. There aren’t a lot of ports on this tablet – there is just one USB port, a 3.5mm headphones jack, and 2 slots for microSD card and SIM card. For charging, there is USB port.
Speaking of buttons, they are all located on left side – the volume toggle, lock/power button, and back. The design of this tablet is clean and it is user friendly as well. However, there isn’t anything spectacular about the looks.
Byond Mi-Book Mi7 comes with seven inches display and it has a resolution of 1,024×600 pixels. The images look sharp and there are nice texture and hues. The brightness of this display is good as compared to other Indian tablets which have lesser brightness.
The touch sensitivity too is good but it could’ve been more sensitive. While playing fast games, we saw some lag in the touch responses.
Screen glass cover isn’t scratch resistant and hence you need to be careful while using it. We would recommend putting a screen guard immediately after buying.
Byond Mi-Book Mi7 comes with dual core 1.2 GHz Cortex A9 processor inside and it is accompanied by 512 MB DDR3 RAM. This combination gives decent performance. In my testing, I could play Temple Run 2 without any hiccups and this is impressive as the game is quite challenging on the hardware.
The accelerometer or gravity sensor too worked fine in our game testing. The manufacturer should have put Android 4.1 OS and 1 GB RAM but you can’t get the world at such low price tags.
Connectivity and calling
Byond Mi-Book Mi7 comes with 3G calling but there is no ear piece and hence all calls will be made through loudspeaker. This isn’t good as you won’t get any privacy for your phone calls. Fortunately, there is Bluetooth connectivity and you can connect a Bluetooth headset for making calls. Some retailers will be selling this tablet with free Bluetooth device.
Our review model had Bluetooth headset inside the box and we tested it for call quality. We didn’t have any problems while calling and both parties could talk on the phone nicely. We were disappointed to see that there is no HDMI port on this device and hence you can’t connect it to a large HDTV. Other connectivity features include USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS.
This tablet comes with 3,200 mAh capacity battery inside and it gives average run time of six to seven hours with Wi-Fi switched on. You will be able to get an entire work day on this device and you get to use this tablet like a cell phone.
Byond Mi-Book Mi7 comes with two megapixels camera on the back and there is also front facing VGA camera for making video calls. Rear camera isn’t really good; the picture quality is below average but you can still use it at times when you don’t have a better quality camera.
There is one more video camera close to the display and in our testing, we could do clear video chatting.
Byond Mi-Book Mi7 price is Rs. 10,500 which is good looking at the features inside.
Byond Mi-Book Mi7 review says that this tablet has good set of features for the price that it is offered for. You can use it as a smartphone if you get a Bluetooth device. The battery life too is decent and there isn’t much to complain about this tablet especially at the price which it is offered for. We wish Byond was a popular brand because the name is relatively new and hence people might find it hard to invest so much money in it.
