Archos 80 G9 Tablet Review

Now there are plenty of gadgets available in the market for the customers to choose. The devices range from low cost to high level segments and cater the requirements of users differently. Those who are looking for low cost devices get a lot of choices now as the smartphone and tablet market in India is booming, where most of the companies are now concentrating on providing low cost Android devices to the general public. One of the devices that sport an 8-inch display is the Archos 80 G9 tablet. Archos has already launched some of its good devices at low cost, but let us find out what this device has to offer.

Design :

The Archos 80 G9 tablet sports an 8-inch display with good resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels. Due to this good quality resolution, the display is capable of showing good quality videos, images and other files. The tablet gets average design, but looks a bit cheap due to plastic-like gloss and a bit elegant due to the display. However, the resolution is not that fabulous to crave for and it shows a bit blurred views. Proper curves are maintained at the edges of this tablet and it holds a camera at the front top of the device. When you hold this device on landscape view, you will find a host of ports and buttons available at the left side of the device.

The back cover of the device gets glossy plastic finish that can even give you your reflection. There are two additions to this device – Kickstand and USB slot. At the left of the device (the back of the device) sits a kickstand that is useful to keep this tablet stand on its own. So whenever you feel like adding a stand to this device to let it stand in landscape view, just slide out the stand attached to it. Overall, the back cover gives strong feel even after made of plastic. There is also a pull-out slot that enables you to access a full sized USB port. Those in Europe will be able to buy the Archos-made USB 3G stick which is not offered worldwide. Here you get to insert your own SIM which will not work in U.S. even if you try.

The back cover of this device sits four small rubberized feet along with a speaker. Including a power button and lock button, the device at its left side holds most of the features. It also holds USB and 3G slot, microSD reader, micro-USB port, miniHDMI socket, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. On the right edge of this device, you will find a volume rocker.4

The camera features a 720p video which does not provide good quality images or video recording.

Memory :

Apart from what has been mentioned above, the Archos 80 G9 tablet features a 512 MB RAM and 8 GB or 16 GB internal memory storage. You can extend the memory with the help of a microSD card slot.

Processor :

The earlier model was packed with a powerful 1 GHz Texas Instruments OMA 4 SoC processor. However, the 2012 model will be available with 1GHz processor or 1.2GHz OMAP™ 4 smart dual-core ARM CORTEX A9 processor. We are still not sure about this feature.

Software :

The previous Archos 80 G9 was loaded with Google’s Android 3.2 Honeycomb version. And now, Archos has improved this feature with the addition of the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich that increases its overall rating. So, you get access to video and music apps from Google Android. There is not much app to access in Honeycomb as the device will not support many, which we think Archos could have given access to the users. Considering its competitors, the IdeaPad K1 and Toshiba Thrive are among those devices that come loaded with plenty of applications, given access by their respective companies. Overall, we can say that the best part about this device which will attract few of the owners is its Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

Battery :

The battery of this device gives good run for the day and is recorded of giving up to 10 hours of backup for internet navigation. So, if not anything, you can at least browse the internet throughout the day and can stay connected to your friends. On the other hand, if you play vides constantly with Wi-Fi on and Bluetooth off and at 50% display brightness, then you can expect the battery to run empty after 7 hours.

Archos 80 G9 Features

Price :

The Archos 80 G9 ICS tablet comes for a price tag of $299.99. However, it is yet to launch in Indian tablet market with its actual price. Still, all we can say is that Archos has a number of device that are sold for reasonable prices for the Indian consumers and so this could also be a cheap ICS tablet. We are sure about this as the company has already marketed this tablet as a low-cost Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet in the market.

Pros :

The Archos 80 G9 tablet has received light weight and is designed with an impressive addition – kickstand that helps the device to stand in a landscape view or horizontally.

Cons :

This device is uncomfortable to hold due to its glossy cover at the rear. Viewing angles are disappointing. Buttons are awkwardly placed. The device has only one camera and it provides poor quality recording.

Review of Archos 80 G9

Overall :

Even though there is not much to do which this device and its poor quality camera, you can at least enjoy its strong make, cheap price and acceptable battery life. The display is very responsive and gives good user experience when apps are opened and used. The performance is also good where transitions between menus and home screens are quickly made. So, if you want more fun than this tablet can actually provide than look for other tablet or go with this. However, before sticking to any decision, just read the Archos 80 G9 reviews, price and specifications that will give you an insight about this tablet.
