AOC Breeze 9.7 – Good performance but lots of other issues
AOC is a popular brand and they have made good quality PC monitors. This company is slowing entering in to other segments as well to increase their market reach. Their latest attempt is in tablet world and with two new tablets of 9.7 and seven inch sizes. We got the AOC Breeze 9.7 in our offices for review and this device is priced affordably at 12,990.
This tablet is offered in two colour options – black and white. Rear plate is all white and rest is all black. Edges have hard plastic and look like rubber. Tablet is really slim at just 8mm and back panel has curving around edges which makes the device feel very easy to hold in hand. The weight of this tablet is 670 grams which isn’t really light. However, it isn’t too heavy either and the good grip makes things even better.
AOC Breeze 9.7 comes with microSD card slot, power port, miniHDMI, microUSB, and 3.5mm headphones jack. On right side, there is lock/power button. Top right side has back and volume rocker button. Power button is located on right side and this isn’t a convenient location to access. The manufacturer should have placed it on top.
Front camera is located on top right side and back camera is on rear side exactly behind front facing camera. There are 2 stereo speakers on either side of rear camera.
Build quality of the AOC Breeze 9.7 is really impressive considering this is a budget product. We didn’t see any clicking sounds, panel gaps, or any inconsistent pasting on this display. Ports and buttons too are quite reassuring. Design isn’t anything spectacular but the manufacturer has worked hard to give the tablet a premium look.
AOC has been known to make good quality PC monitors and hence we expected good display on the AOC Breeze 9.7. However, we were disappointed to see that the screen has a low resolution of 1,024×768 pixels. This low resolution isn’t a deal breaker but we expected something better especially at this price.
On the bright side, the screen comes with good colour depth. Contrast could have been better though.
AOC Breeze 9.7 comes with dual core 1.5GHz processor and it is accompanied by a gig of RAM. There is also 16GB storage memory inside and 12.5GB is available to the users for storing their content. The internal hard is fast enough for playing high quality HD games without any hiccups. In our tests, we could play Beach Buggy Blitz and Temple Run Oz on this tablet and we didn’t have any problems of slowing down or framing. There weren’t any heat issues either. All other apps too could run without any trouble. After this, we tested the HDMI port by connecting this tablet to a large HDTV and it too worked well. Overall, the performance of this tablet is quite satisfactory. In fact, the performance was a tad better than other popular devices like Samsung Galaxy SIII and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
AOC Breeze 9.7 comes with two megapixels rear facing camera and the quality, as expected, is quite low. It is meant for use only when you don’t have anything else for clicking pictures. You can use these pictures for uploading on Web but any stretching of the images will result in pixilation. Front camera too is bad and is usable only for video chatting.
AOC Breeze 9.7 comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS inside and the tablet comes with some useful apps preinstalled. Apart from that, this is stock version of the OS with minimal changes.
AOC Breeze 9.7 comes with 7,000mAh battery inside and though it appears to be big, the battery life is quite small. In our tests, we lost around 50 per cent battery life while playing a game called Dune Buggy Blitz in just 40 minutes. We then recharged the battery fully and were again disappointed to see that the battery lasted for just two-and-half hours when we used it for browsing the Internet.
This battery life is really small and we won’t recommend this tablet for frequent travellers. The supplied charger can charge the battery fully in one-and-half hours which is fast and this is the only saving grace about the battery.
AOC Breeze 9.7 gives great performance and the build quality too is good. Battery life is the only disappointing feature of this tablet. Display of this device is good but from a company like AOC, we expected something better. Camera quality is awful – two megapixels cameras have become out-dated now and we don’t know what AOC was thinking here.
If you are buying this tablet anyways, then you should be wary about the aforementioned shortcomings. The performance and build quality of the AOC Breeze 9.7 is good and it is better than some premium products out there. However, the screen quality is quite average and this will certainly disappoint people who intend to spend a lot of time with the tablet.
It is hard to recommend this tablet. Instead, take a look at something like Spice Stellar Pad Mi 1010 which costs less and is better as well.
