Toshiba Qosmio X870 – Gaming laptop sans SSD
I have tested Toshiba Qosmio laptops before and I know that this series has all high end hardware inside. The X870 is a flagship model and it does not disappoint with specs like Intel Core i7 chip and Nvidia GTX 670M GeForce GPU inside. This one is amongst the fastest laptops in the market.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 comes with aluminum body and lid. There are some red dashes along with back lit crimson keyboard and this gives the laptop some eye candy that is often seen in gaming machines. I did not really find it attractive but this is still welcome from the other black matte designs that we see on other gaming machines.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Display :
Toshiba Qosmio X870 comes with a full HD display which is glossy but the viewing angles are quite good. There is also the 3D feature and this laptop has 2nd iteration of Nvidia 3D vision kit. The graphic card maker says that bigger glasses here are immersive because the light in the ambiance is blocked.
But things will get more bulky especially if you already wear glasses. One thing that I liked here is that the wireless emitter which links the glasses to computer is now integrated inside the chassis.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Hardware :
Toshiba has put in everything in here and there is also the proprietary manufacturer’s software. There are 3D bundled glasses, speakers of Harmon Kardon, high end GPU, and Blu-ray optical drive. All this makes this laptop good enough for multimedia heavy duty applications or for gaming.
The performance will be affected if you switch on the 3D feature and hence it is recommended that you use the graphics settings economically. One thing that I was disappointed in terms of hardware is that there is no option for SSD.
There is Intel quad core i7 chip inside along with Nvidia Geforce GTX 670M. This isn’t the highest possible configuration available in the market right now. There are other laptops having faster hardware but it will cost you more money.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Keyboard :
Toshiba Qosmio X870 comes with chiclet styled keyboard which has red back-lighting for matching its look. In spite of the thick body, key travel here was a bit shallow. Directional buttons are smaller than what I preferred and Toshiba has also put in a number pad. Function buttons are reversed which is good and you get to adjust the multimedia functions with just one button press.
Toshiba says that this keyboard has ‘enhanced labels’ but in my tests, I found that the font for the buttons was a bit large and it was more appropriate for books of children. Keyboard of Alienware M14x is much better.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Touchpad :
Toshiba Qosmio X870 touchpad is quite good. This one can take multitouch and doesn’t look out of the place for Ultrabook. The software is powered by Synaptics and there are a full multi touch gesture suite which is accessible from the Control Panel.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Storage :
Toshiba Qosmio X870 has 750GB HDD and there is no SSD onboard. The manufacturer should have paired one SSD along with standard HDD or they could have put 2 SDDs working together in one tandem in setup of RAID. But this would have been expensive. Toshiba hasn’t offered this option unlike the competitors.
Qosmio X870 Ports and Connections :
Toshiba Qosmio X870 comes with 4 USB ports of 3.0 technology and there are also HDMI and VGA ports. SD card reader is available along with Bluetooth wireless radio and standard Wi-Fi. All these ports are located on either side of the laptop. One side also has a big air vent.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Speakers :
Toshiba Qosmio X870 comes with Harmon Kardon brand of speakers but in my testing, they lacked the punch and this is probably due to the absence of a subwoofer. I tried even at the highest volumes but these speakers weren’t really good.
Qosmio X870 Bundled Software :
If you have used Toshiba laptops before, then you will know that they come with a lot of software inside. This one too is no different. There is the popular Resolution+ which is a plugin for use with Windows Media Player. It upscales the SD videos to HD quality. There is also the HDD Protection feature which automatically detects any defect in the HDD movement and gives you pop up message.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 also comes with a lot of third party software which is preloaded on this notebook. They include Norton Internet Security, Corel Digital Studio, and Skype. You will have to uninstall them one by one if you don’t need them.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Competition :
For expensive gaming notebooks, Alienware and Asus are the 2 biggest rivals of this Qosmio laptop. I have reviewed Alienware M17x before and the price point of the two laptops is quite similar. There is just one difference – M17x comes with less powerful GPU as compared to Qosmio. On the other hand, Toshiba’s processor is a bit slower.
That said, Asus G75VW is the most affordable amongst the three but both the CPU and GPU are slower. But it does have a Thunderbolt port which might come in handy for some tech geeks.
Qosmio X870 Performance Tests :
During my tests, the Toshiba Qosmio X870 could play all games without any problems at the full HD native resolution. Battlefield 3 posed some problems if the settings were taken to Ultra from High.
Graphics card on Toshiba Qosmio X870 was good enough for playing all the latest games but hiccups start when you switch on 3D. For Battlefield 3, I had to lower display resolution at 1,366×768 pixels for getting playable experience in High settings. Also, you can also lower game graphics instead of resolution.
That said, the 3D feature will certainly put some stress on this laptop and you will have to lower you expectations here. Also, the Nvidia 3D implementation might change from one game to the other.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Battery :
One thing that surprised me here is that Toshiba has disabled Nvidia’s graphic switching capabilities and instead have said that this laptop will give 3D high quality pictures at all the times seamlessly. Due to this, you will not be able to use this laptop for more than one hour with out charging point close to you.
During my tests, this laptop survived for an hour and 33 minutes while playing SD videos with audio muted and Wi-Fi switched off.
Toshiba Qosmio X870 Price :
The US price of this laptop isn’t know but this notebook is sold in UK for £1,699.
Qosmio X870 Post Sales Support :
The manufacturer offers one year warranty for this laptop and it includes labor and parts. The warranty plan is customizable according to your needs and there are also some services of data recovery that you can check. There is 24/7 phone line support and you can go to the Website for driver downloads and online documents for this model.
