ASUS G75VW-DS71 Laptop Review

Asus has been known to make really good looking laptops in the past and with the G75VW, this manufacturer is trying to prove that they are as good as, if not better than Alienware laptops. This laptop comes with Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge chip inside, 12GB RAM, and for gaming addicts, there is Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M graphics card. Read on to find out if this one is the ultimate gaming machine that you have been looking for.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Design :

Asus G75VW-DS71 is a really good looking laptop. It comes with plastic soft touch lid and has Republic of Gamers and Asus logo in center.

Keyboard has aluminum deck which wraps on back of this notebook and there is a speaker grille above it. Soft touch rubberized plastic palm rest is provided to avoid any fatigue to the wrists if you are typing for a long time. I just have one complaint about the design – the lid attracts a lot of fingerprints quite easily.

With dimensions of 16.3×12.6×2 inches and with weight of 9.4 pounds, this laptop is a bit larger and a hair lighter than 17 inches Alienware M17x. However, dimensions don’t matter much in gaming laptops as they are very heavily and aren’t made to be carried a lot.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Display :

Asus G75VW-DS71 comes with a matte screen which isn’t seen a lot in laptops these days. This screen is also brighter as compared to an average laptop. The resolution is 1,920×1,080 pixels and this screen offers vivid colors with sharp details. There is also anti-glare finish provided along with generous angles for viewing. The clarity wasn’t lost even when I moved a lot.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Audio :

Good audio system is a must in a gaming laptop. For testing, I played Crysis 2 and the in-built subwoofer had great quality sound. This laptop comes with Altec Lansing speakers and there is also Sonic Master technology from Asus inside.

You will have to tweak the audio a bit in order to get the perfect sound. For instance, if the bass is too high, then its sounds like underwater. However, the audio quality is really good overall. If you want something more than the inbuilt speakers, then this laptop has HDMI 1.4 output.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Keyboard :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 comes with island styled keyboard and there is full number pad too. While testing, I found that the tactile feedback is right and typing is error free. I easily got around using this keyboard well and there wasn’t any learning curve involved.

There isn’t any keyboard flex and I think that this is due to the aluminum base. The keyboard has back lighting too which isn’t unexpected in a high end system like this. But this laptop doesn’t have a lot of multicolor options for the keyboard like the ones that are offered on Alienware M17x.

G75VW-DS71 Touchpad :

Touchpad on the ASUS G75VW-DS71 is the best I have ever seen in a laptop. There is 4.1 by 2.5 inches Synaptics touchpad inside which is quite spacious. Cursor glides quite accurately and smoothly on the screen and there is support for gestures like three finger flick, pinch to zoom, and 2 finger scrolling. You don’t need to put a lot of pressure on the mouse buttons to press them.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Heat :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 comes with vents that are strategically placed and hence I didn’t have any problems while playing the graphic intensive titles like Batman: Arkham City. There aren’t a lot of heat issues as the fans are placed well and the heat is dissipated in a very good way.

G75VW-DS71 Ports :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 comes with four of USB 3.0 ports – two are located on the either side of the laptop. There is a ThunderBolt port and it is the first one that I have ever seen in a Windows laptop. Not many ThunderBolt devices are available in the market right now but they will be coming soon so this is kind of a future proof feature. There are other ports onboard like headphones jack, microphone jack, three in one card reader, Ethernet, HDMI and VGA.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Webcam :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 has two megapixels HD Webcam and it can capture pictures at 1,280×720 pixels. Videos are captured in 640×480 pixels through Asus LifeFrame application. The images were quite crisp and colors were warm. However, there was some lag involved while taking videos and pictures in high resolution.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Performance :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 is really powerful underneath as well. There is Intel 3rd generation 2.3 GHz Ivy Bridge processor Core i7-3610QM quad core chip, 12GB RAM (you can upgrade this to 16GB), 750GB dual 7,200 rpm SATA hard drives, and Nvidia Geforce GTX 660M graphic cards having 2GB GDDR5 VRAM. All this hardware promises a lot but while testing, it felt short of expectations but the difference wasn’t huge.

The dual 750GB 7,200 rpm hard disk drives don’t have fast transfer or boot speeds. It took a minute and six seconds for Windows 7 to load completely and this is six seconds slower as compared to other desktop replacement laptops. MSI GT60 took just 53 seconds to load up.

I then copied five GB of mixed files on the dual hard drives of this laptop and it took about two minutes and 50 seconds at a speed of 29.9 mbps. The average is 37.4 mbps and speed of GT60 74.8 mbps.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Gaming :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 comes with Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M graphic card having two gigabytes of GDDR5 VRAM and the graphic performance were quite impressive. However, this laptop isn’t as good as the MSI GT60 in terms of gaming prowess. I played World of Warcraft with Good settings on a resolution of 1,366×768 pixels and got 231 fps which is 90 fps faster than other gaming laptops. I then used the Ultra setting and set the resolution at 1,920×1,080 pixels and got 88fps for the same game and this is 20 fps faster than others. MSI GT60 was one of the few laptops that gained good response. It had 265fps on Good settings at 1,366×768 pixels and 101 fps at Ultra settings at resolution of 1,920×1,080 pixels.

G75VW-DS71 Software :

I was glad to see that ASUS G75VW-DS71 doesn’t have a lot of boatware on it. There are a lot of Asus utilities and some of them are useful. For instance, LifeFrame is Webcam utility, Asus WebStore is online back up and sync application, and there is also Fan Filter Checker which lets you know if you need to clean the vents. There is also a portal for music, games, and other such multimedia content – Asus Vibe Fun Center. Other software that is preinstalled on this laptop includes Roxio CinePlayer, Trend Micro Anti-Virus, Office 2010, and Adobe Reader 9.

G75VW-DS71 Battery life :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 doesn’t have a really long battery life but this isn’t unexpected from a desktop replacement laptop. For testing, I surfed the Web on Wi-Fi and this laptop lasted for three hours and 11 minutes. This is 24 minutes on an average. MSI GT60 lasted for four hours and 37 minutes.

ASUS G75VW-DS71 Price :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 is priced at $1,799 and there are a lot of configurations available. The price will go up if you opt for more expensive hardware.

Conclusion :

ASUS G75VW-DS71 is a really good gaming machine for the price that it is offered for. It could play all the latest titles at smooth frame rates but if you are willing to spend more, there is Alienware for $200 extra.
