Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 – Windows 8 touchscreen laptop

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 is a very thin 15 inch laptop having conservative design. The price too is quite modest at $729 considering the Intel Core i5 chip inside. The unique thing about this laptop is its touch screen interface. It isn’t there just for promotion or for attracting attention. The touchscreen is really useful and the interface has been implemented very well. Overall, this is one of the cheapest budget laptops that you will ever find in the market right now.

I have seen this same configuration for $699 before which includes 4GB RAM, Core i5 chip, 500 GB hard disk, optical drive, and back lit keyboard. There is also another laptop available which trades the Core i3 processor and keeps all the other specs including touch screen.

That said, if you are looking for an economical touch screen experience with Windows 8 then V5 is a good laptop at the sub $700 price.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Features

Plastic body of the laptop looks really good when seen from distance. However, when you look from a close distance, the small keyboard, and thick lid doesn’t qualify this for high end laptop. The 15 inches screen has a resolution of 1,36×768 pixels which isn’t good enough for this price. However, my biggest gripe is the four cell smallish battery which just ran for three and half hours in my tests. Due to this, frequent travellers will keep away from this laptop.

  • $729 price (my review model)
  • Intel Core i5-3317M 1.7GHz chip
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM 1600MHz
  • 500GB hard drive 5,400rpm
  • Intel HM77 chipset
  • Intel HD4000 GPU
  • Windows 8 OS
  • 15.0 x 9.9 inches WxD dimensions
  • 0.9 – 1.0 inches height
  • 15.6 inches diagonal screen size
  • 6.0 pounds weight with adapter

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Design :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 isn’t an out dated product in terms of design. Just like other laptops of its times, this one too is really thin as compared to the older laptops. The manufacturer has put in a lot of hard work for making this laptop thin. This isn’t an ultrabook officially but I guess all laptops will be opting for such a design in the future to attract frequent travellers.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Price

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 has a plastic matte silver body which looks really good when seen from a distance. However, when seen from a close distance, this laptop doesn’t have any detail or personality. I was concerned to see that this laptop has some flex and the black single plastic hinge for the screen looks a bit cheap. For this price, there are other better looking laptops for this price.

Aspire V5-571P-6499 Keyboard :

Interior wide panel on the bottom is dominated by keyboard which is almost edge to edge. There is number pad located on right side. I found the individual keys were a bit smaller and number pad buttons felt smaller than the rest. The manufacturer has put in a lot of space between the buttons for comfortable typing and hence the buttons are smaller. Keys wiggled under my funder but keyboard tray has some flex bouncy feeling. But this isn’t expected in a low priced laptop. There is backlighting for the keyboard and this is seldom seen in such budget laptops.

Acer V5-571P-6499 Touchpad :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 touchpad is large and it doesn’t have any buttons. You get a lot of space and hence multitouch gestures like 2 finger scroll have a lot of room. However, the response of touchpad is jumpy as compared to others. But there is touchscreen interface on board and hence you won’t need to struggle with awkward gestures of Windows 8 touchpad. I was using screen to navigate.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Screen :

The display of the Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 is 15.6 inches big. The screen is bright and crisp and there is edge-to-edge glass on the front which gives the laptop upscale look. Touch panel was very responsive during my tests but I haven’t seen a laptop having sluggish screen to date. However, I was disappointed with the low end 1,366×768 pixels resolution which is out dated for a 15 inches laptop. Few things like Windows 8 main menu and some native apps of Microsoft scaled well to the lower resolution. However, surfing on the Web was a bit off. The text was a bit too large and the screen estate was small.

Aspire V5-571P-6499 Audio :

Audio on the Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 is a bit thin but speakers, on the bright side, are loud enough. The speakers are good for watching YouTube but if you like listening to a lot of music, then I would recommend you to get a good set of headphones.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Review

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Connections :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 comes with good connections and ports. This is a 15 inches laptop and hence there are some constraints for space. Hence, the Ethernet and VGA jacks are available on through external dongle. Also, there is just a single USB 3.0 port (with 2 more USB 2.0 ports)

Acer V5-571P-6499 Configuration and price :

Acer is offering plenty of configuration options for this laptop. You can choose from different screen size, keyboard without number pads and different models. Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 price of my review model was $729 but there is a laptop available for $529. The less expensive laptop gives up Core i3 chip but it still has the touchscreen.

Aspire V5-571P-6499 Processor :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 contains Intel Core i5 1.7 GHz 3317U processor and this is the same chip that is seen in a lot of Windows 8 laptops these days. I wasn’t surprised to see that there isn’t much difference in the performance of these machines as they have the same processor inside.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Specs

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 GPU :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 only has Intel HD 4000 GPU inside and hence you won’t be able to play the newer games with all their might. Also, won’t be able to take the resolution beyond the basic 1,366×768 pixels.

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 Battery :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 has low display resolution and less power components with large body (for holding a powerful battery). Looking at all this, I thought that the battery life would be superb. However, I was disappointed to see that this system lasted for just three and half hours in my battery tests. This is the shortest battery life I have ever seen in a Windows 8 laptop.

Aspire V5-571P-6499 Service :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 comes with one year warranty for labour and parts. The manufacturer has offered all the documentation and FAQs on their web site and you can also get support over phone, e-mail, and chat.

Conclusion :

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6499 isn’t really disappointing or exciting. I loved the implementation of touchscreen interface at reasonable price. The price is good but you will find better quality notebooks in the market.
