Nokia Lumia 920 Vs Samsung Galaxy S III
We all know that Samsung is enjoying the best days of their life with Galaxy phones. Samsung Galaxy S series of phones are the flagship products from this company and a lot of people consider this to be the best phones in the industry. Some even think of this phone as better than Apple’s iPhone. On the other hand, Nokia hasn’t been doing too well in the market. They recently dumped Symbian OS and jumped on the Windows OS ship but haven’t enjoyed drastic increase in sales till now. That said, we all know what Nokia is capable of as it is one of the largest manufacturers of mobile phones in the world. I got a chance to compare these two phones head to head; let’s see who wins the battle.
Both these phones are flagship models of the respective manufacturers. Flagship means that these phones have all possible features that are available in smartphones these days. Hence, the price is expected to be a bit high. The price of Samsung Galaxy S III is Rs. 37499 and the price of Nokia Lumia 920 is 30,990. Samsung Galaxy S III is a bit more expensive but price doesn’t matter if you are looking for the best quality, does it?
Winner here is Nokia Lumia 920.
The Nokia handset which I got in for reviewing had yellow edges with black rectangular design inside. The edges weren’t curved and the phone had a boxy kinda look. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S III phone had Pebble blue color with smooth rounded edges. The SGS III looks more pretty but both phones are a bit too big to hold comfortably in the hand and this is partly due to the demand in bigger screen amongst the users.
Nokia Lumia 920 is 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7 mm and Samsung Galaxy S III is 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm. Weight of the Nokia phone is 185 grams and Samsung’s handset weighs 133 grams.
Samsung phone comes with the following color options – Pebble blue, Amber brown, Marble white, Garnet red, Titanium grey, and Sapphire black and Nokia phone is offered in Black, Red, Gray, Yellow, and White shades.
Winner here is Samsung Galaxy S III.
Both these phones have really good screens. Nokia Lumia 920 has an IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen having support for 16 million colors. The resolution of the screen is 768×1,280 pixels and the screen size is 4.5 inches. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S III phone has 4.8 inches screen having a resolution of 720×1,280 pixels.
Similarities here are that both phones have Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and both screens support 16m colors and multitouch which isn’t unexpected in high end phones like these.
Comparing the two screens, I liked the display of Samsung Galaxy S III phone as it has Super AMOLED screen (versus the Nokia Lumia 920 which just has TFT IPS screen). The objects on the Samsung phones looked brighter and they had more life to them. The colors also popped more and Samsung’s screen is ten per cent bigger than Nokia’s.
The winner here is Samsung Galaxy S III.
Processing power :
Samsung Galaxy S III has quad core 1.4 GHz processor and Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a dual core 1.5 GHz chip inside. Samsung’s phone has Mali-400MP inside and Nokia comes with Adreno 225 GPU. Ram is the same in both phones – 1024 MB. The processor of Samsung Galaxy S III is faster but you won’t notice the better speed in standard use. The edge in the speed will be useful if you are using higher end apps from Android or Windows Marketplace.
The winner here is Samsung Galaxy S III.
This is a bit tough territory because both these phones have really good cameras. Nokia Lumia 920 has a 8.7 megapixels camera and Samsung Galaxy S III comes with 8 megapixels shooter. The Nokia camera has features like Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, optical image stabilization, PureView technology, touch focus, geo-tagging, and dual-LED flash.
On the other hand, the Samsung phone has features like autofocus, LED flash, features, PureView technology, touch focus, geo-tagging, HD video and image recording, touch focus, geo-tagging, smile and face detection, and image stabilization.
The picture resolution of both phones is the same – 3264 x 2448 pixels and both can capture 1080p videos 30 frames per second. It is hard to tell which camera is better, the pictures on Samsung phone had more clarity than that of Nokia’s phone but this was due to the Super AMOLED screen. When seen on a computer screen, both photos looked the same.
On the front, Samsung phone has a 1.3 megapixels camera and Nokia comes with 1.9 megapixels camera for video calling.
Both cameras are equally powerful and hence this contest ends in a tie here.
Music and video :
Samsung Galaxy S III media player can read the following formats – MP3, WAV, eAAC+, WMA, MP4, H.264, H.263, and WMV and the Nokia phone has a player which can read MP4, DivX, XviD, WMV, H.264, H.263, MP3, WAV, eAAC+, AC3, and FLAC formats.
Again both phones have equally good music and video player but the winner here is Samsung Galaxy S III the Android interface is more user friendly than that of Nokia’s Windows Mango interface.
Both these phones come with huge storage memory. Nokia Lumia 920 has 32GB internal memory and there is no microSD card slot for further expansion. Samsung GSIII has three options for internal memory – 16, 32, 64 GB and there is also a microSD card slot which can take 64GB of cards. The winner here is SGSIII but 32GB of memory should be enough for storing all your data. I won’t recommend buying SGSIII just because it has more memory option.
Winner here is Samsung Galaxy SIII.
Both these phones have high end battery inside to supply juice for the high end features. Nokia phone comes with lithium ion 2000 mAh (BP-4GW) battery inside and SGSIII has Li-Ion 2100 mAh battery inside. Battery of Samsung phone is better with 21 hours and 40 minutes of rated talktime on 2G as compared to 17 hours of talk time on 2G for Nokia. However, with extensive use, you will have to charge both these phones once in two days.
