Salora PowerMaxx Z1 – Good performance phone but pricey
You might not have heard of Salora brand name before and we don’t blame you if you haven’t. It used to make television sets but disappeared in to the oblivion. Now they are out with their first smartphone having Android OS inside. There are plenty of 4.5 inch smartphones in the market right now and Salora has worked hard for making it different from the others by putting in good hardware inside.
Salora PowerMaxx Z1 is a phone with elegant design and it is all glass on the front except for bezel of 2mm. Case is built well and Salora says that the surface shell has aluminium alloy material along with fibre special drawing technology. Due to this, the phone feels premium in the hand.
Front part has metallic finish and rear portion comes with plastic textured finish. In spite of the big battery inside, this phone isn’t really heavy. It weighs just 170 grams and we found it very comfortable in the hands. Back panel is curvy on the edges which add to comfort. Back panel is textured too for giving you good grip.
Back panel has eight megapixels camera with LED flash located on top left. Bottom right side has speaker grille. 3.5 mm headphones jack and USB port are located on top and right side houses the lock/power button. Volume rocker is there on left side and it is very easy to use.
Salora PowerMaxx Z1 price is Rs 13,300 which is a bit high as compared to other phones having same hardware inside. However, this phone has better phone call quality and the battery life too is longer than standard.
Salora PowerMaxx Z1 review says this phone comes with 4.5 inches IPS screen having qHD resolution of 960×540 pixels. The sparkling display adds to the phone’s aesthetics and it is a vibrant and bright display. There is something called Zero Gap technology used for giving better touch response and readability. This also improves the quality of the phone for its price range. The viewing angle is good and there is anti-glare to make sure you can read well.
I have just one gripe here. The capacitive buttons below display don’t have backlighting and hence it is hard to use in dark. This might not be a big issue for some of you as you will get used to its location over a period of time. However, Salora should have done better here.
This phone comes with dual core 1 GHZ processor inside just like rival phones. When I tested this phone, the performance was really good and I had a great time with games such as Temple Run Brake. The frame rates are decent.
I compared this phone with LG Optimus 2X (which is an old handset but it well known for superior performance) and the Salora PowerMaxx Z1 was better. The manufacturer should have put in a gig of RAM inside for better performance. However, all rival phones only give 512 MB RAM inside.
There is something called ‘Dual Mic’ in this phone which cuts the ambient noise in phone calls. i tested it in my offices and it delivered to its promises to give better phone call quality.
Salora PowerMaxx Z1 review says that this phone comes with 3,200 mAh battery inside and this size is nearly double as compared to rival phones. For instance, the Spice Stellar Virtuoso Mi495 has the same processor and display of the Salora phone but still sports 1,700 mAh battery inside.
Bigger battery gives you more juice and the manufacturer promises 2 and half day run time in normal use like calling, music playback, Wi-Fi browsing. Other phones having such hardware only give 1 and half day battery juice and hence people who travel a lot will benefit from the extended battery life of the Salora phone.
Salora PowerMaxx Z1 has front facing 1.3 megapixels camera and rear side has eight megapixels camera. The latter has a 3,264×2,448 pixels and it can also record HD 720p videos. The camera has features like optical image stabilization, multi shot, panorama view, time lapse video, smile shutter, automatic ambient detection, facial beautify, etc.
Rear camera has good image quality even in low lights with some minimal graining. With brighter settings, the pics are colourful and more beautiful. In my testing, this camera could detect faces easily and hence clicking pictures was fast. Front facing 1.3MP camera is good only for video calling.
Salora PowerMaxx Z1 has good build quality. It also has good battery life and display quality. The hardware inside is on par with competing phones. However, the price of Rs. 13,300 is bit high. Rival phones sell for Rs. 2000 less.
Some might feel that the high price is justified with better call quality and longer battery life. I would certainly recommend this phone if you are looking for good quality handset with plenty of features.
Salora just has one phone in the market right now and due to this, some people might have second thoughts about investing so much money on it. However, Salora is having big plans ahead and they will soon bring more phones. I guess Salora will become a more trusted brand soon.
