Byond B66 – Budget Android smartphone with big display and fast processor
Byond B66 is another five inches smartphone by Byond and it was released recently in the Indian markets. Before this, I got a lot of other Byond handsets for review – Byond B63, Byond B51, Byond B54, and Byond Phablet III. This manufacturer also gave me two of its tablets for review – Mi-Book Mi7 and Mi-Book Mi8.
The previous Byond products which I had reviewed were good in terms of speed and processing. Hence, with Byond B66, I was expecting something similar. The price of this phone is Rs. 9,000 and it will compete with phones like Micromax Canvas II, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Karbonn A21, Intex Aqua 5.0, Sony Xperia Tipo, Lava Iris 501, etc. Read on to find out if this phone is worth your hard earned money.
Byond B66 comes with a heavy and big body and this handset is 79.7x146x12.1 mm and the weight of this phone is 218 grams. The thickness is more than Intex Aqua 5.0 and Canvas II. The increased wieight might be due to bigger battery inside and the metal strip. The latter gives the phone an upmarket look.
We weren’t really disappointed with the dimensions but we were a bit worried about back panel which is fitted poorly. The metal strip gives some sort of confidence and makes the phone look durable. But overall, Byond could have done better to make this phone sturdier.
Back panel of this phone is really shiny; it makes the phone look better and there is textured surface for giving you good grip. This phone is big and hence good grip is essential.
Byond B66 has volume rocker located on right and on the top side, there is USB port, 3.5mm headphones jack, and power button.
Byond B66 has five inches screen having a resolution of 480×800 pixels. This resolution is also seen on 4.5 inches screen. The manufacturer should have given better resolution as the screen is bigger. It is a 4.5 inches resolution on five inches screen and it results in poor pixel density. However, I won’t complain about this in such a budget phone.
Apart from the resolution, the screen is pretty okay and it responds to the touches very well. This isn’t a scratch resistant display and hence it is recommended that you get screen guard. Most budget phones have displays that are prone to scratches. Viewing angle is better than some rival handsets.
Byond B66 has eight megapixels camera. In most Indian smartphones have high megapixels rating for their cameras but the quality isn’t good enough. Same goes true for this camera as well. Pictures aren’t bad but for eight megapixels rating, you’d expect much better.
Byond B66 also comes with front facing camera which can be used for video chatting and taking self-portrait pictures. But the quality isn’t good.
Byond B66 comes with 2,600mAh big battery inside and in my tests, I got good battery backup. I played some games for about one hour and it sucked forty per cent battery juice. This means you will be able to play games for about two-and-half hours on full charge. This is good for any smartphone having such a big display. With standard use, this phone will easily stay alive for an entire day.
Processor and performance
Byond B66 comes with dual core 1.2GHz processor inside and there is 512MB RAM. This phone runs on Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich OS. We have seen this hardware before and the performance wasn’t too spectacular on this phone. However, it is pretty acceptable for its price.
To test the performance, we tested some graphic challenging games like Riptide GP, Temple Run 2, Shadowgun DeadZone, and Shine Runner. This phone could handle all of them very easily. If you go through any performance problems, you can use task manager to free up the memory.
Byond B66 has great sounding headphones and I was delighted with its quality. I had an excellent music listening experience here. Display resolution could have been better; it would have given better HD viewing experience but this isn’t too bad either.
Byond B66 weight is a bit high but apart from that, this phone doesn’t have anything disappointing about it. For Rs. 9,000 this phone is good considering features like fast processor and big five inches screen.
